    Hello,

I am a master’s student finishing with a GIS certificate. I am interested in gamification and want to know how to get into it. I have a coding background and am also very creative.

It would be great to hear back.

    Thank you,
    Jessica Escobar

Hi Jessica, My advice is to learn through practice. Start by choosing a game engine like “Unity or Unreal” and begin by learning the basics through simple game projects. Your GIS expertise will be beneficial when your game incorporates spatial components. It’s important to learn how to integrate geospatial data into the game engine using the correct data format. Game engines can also assist you in creating Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) apps and games. GIS can enhance not only the technical aspects but also the narrative of your game, especially if it’s tied to real locations, characters, or events. Lastly, Iowa State University offers courses in Video Game Design and Programming—consider checking those out.

Best of luck on your journey into gamification!
