Welcome to Geography Awareness Week 2025! This is a week to celebrate and raise awareness of geography, both as a discipline and as a part of daily life. This year’s theme is “Making Spaces of Possibility.”
Geography is the study of space and place on the Earth. Space refers to the geometric [physical location] surface of the Earth. Place is an area of space that is viewed as significant, therefore transformed by naming (or claiming) and filling of the area [given cultural identity]. Places can change, or transform, over time.

As we start out the week, check out the American Association of Geographers StoryMap, “Making Spaces of Possibility,” to find the AAG GeoWeek Idea Toolkit, printouts, and review the map showing events occurring throughout the week, including our GIS Day event on Wednesday.
